Audition/ Interview Information
Before completing these audition/interview tasks, you must apply for the relevant course on the North Kent College website.
Don’t panic about the audition
Auditioning is usual practice within the Performing Arts industry, and something that you will become very familiar with as you continue your acting training. We understand that for some of you it will be the first time that you have ever auditioned. Remember we are not looking for the perfect actor. We are looking for potential and enthusiasm.
What you need to prepare
- Please bring with you a written statement that expresses your interest in Acting and performing. (A4 page is enough)
- Please prepare a contemporary monologue (a long speech made by just one person).
- The monologue should be no more than two minutes long. No less than 1 minute.
- It should come from a play script.
- You should learn the monologue off by heart.
- You can find monologues in published monologue books and plays. You can get these from libraries or any good bookstores.
Please Avoid
- Monologues from Dennis Kelly’s DNA or Blood Brothers.
- Monologues that are delivered in an accent that isn’t your own.
- Monologues from any musical or film script.
- Monologues downloaded from the internet.
What will happen on the day?
You will:
Fill out an interview form.
Have a welcome chat with one of the Theatre Directors.
Be shown around the theatre and see our amazing facilities.
Watch current rehearsals and/or participate in workshops led by Miskin Theatre Directors and actors.
Perform your individual audition. This needs to be learnt off by heart.
What should you bring?
- Wear comfy, non-revealing, loose clothing.
- Bring bottled water, no other drinks are allowed in the Theatre.
- Be ready to talk about your passion for acting and your reasons for wanting to come to the Miskin.
- Bring a packed lunch or money for food if you want to have lunch in our canteen.
- Recent school report.
- Passport size photo with your name printed on the back (you will hand this in after you are collected from Reception)
What will happen after your audition?
You will be called within 48 hours confirming one of the following:
- Level 4 – conditional offer
- Level 3 Acting for Camera- conditional offer
- Level 3 Acting – conditional offer
- Level 2 Acting – conditional offer
- Recall
- No offer
And finally…
If you have any learning difficulties or require learning support, it is really important that you let us know when you accept your audition so that the right measures can be taken to support you. If you have an EHCP please bring this along on the day.

Don’t panic about the audition

We understand that for some of you it will be the first time that you have ever auditioned and remember we are not looking for the perfect performer – we are looking for potential and enthusiasm!
What you need to prepare
Dance
Please prepare a solo dance piece, in your chosen style.
The piece should be 1-2 minutes in length and can be performed to a piece of music of your choice. You will have access to a sound system with Bluetooth facilities.
You will also have the opportunity to sing a song of your choice – This part of your audition is NOT compulsory and will have no bearing on our decision towards acceptance on the dance course.
Musical Theatre
Please prepare a solo song to sing to the audition panel, it should be approximately 1-2 minutes in length.
Choose a song that best suits your voice and that you feel most comfortable with. Please bring a backing track as there will be no pianist on the day.
Please prepare a solo dance piece, in your chosen style.
The piece should be 1-2 minutes in length and can be performed to a piece of music of your choice.
You will have access to a sound system with Bluetooth facilities.
If you would like to perform a monologue to the panel, then please keep this to approximately 1-2 minutes.
Please avoid
You should bring your soundtrack downloaded on your phone. Please note that music or backing tracks used on the day should not be played off the internet, as calls or notifications could disturb the audition.
What should you bring?
- Ballet shoes, tights and leotard for the classical class if you currently study this; if not, please bring tightly fitted clothing.
- You will need to bring a change of clothing for the rest of the day’s classes, there is no restriction, but these should be suitable to dance in. In addition, please bring jazz shoes. (No T-shirts, baggy trousers or outdoor footwear are to be worn during the morning classes)
- Hand Towel
- Packed Lunch (There is a canteen available on site providing hot and cold food)
- Bring bottled water, no other drinks are allowed in the Studios
- Be ready to talk about your passion for the performing arts and your reasons for wanting to come to the Miskin.
- Recent school report
- Passport size photo with your name printed on the back (you will hand this in on arrival)
What will happen after your audition?
- You will be called confirming one of the following:
- Level 3 Dance – conditional offer
- Level 3 Musical Theatre – conditional offer
- Level 2 Dance – conditional offer
- Recall – invited along to our Miskin Academy Programme once a month to monitor progress.
- No Offer

Music performance and music voice courses
Before the audition
Your written task
Prior to your interview/audition you must submit (as a word document or pdf) a short written piece of a minimum of 500 words.
You must also provide a copy of a recent school report. We cannot offer you a place until this is provided.
This will be a supporting statement to your application.
Please include
A summary of your background, skills, and strengths as a musician/singer.
Describe any musical experiences you have had including performances, compositions, recording sessions, or other relevant information.
Explain what qualities a professional musician requires and how you have demonstrated these qualities in your own work.
Describe an important musical event in your life. this could be the first concert you attended, a song that means something to you, a musical experience you enjoyed as a child or something completely different!!
Your written piece should be submitted as a pdf or word document to music@northkent.ac.uk a minimum of 7 days prior to your interview/audition date.
The written task will be considered as part of our assessment of your suitability for the course.
At the audition
You should prepare an audition of between 3 minutes and 5 minutes in length
The songs or material can be of your choice, but we encourage you to perform 2 different songs to show different styles, if possible.
Singers – please note we will not be able to consider acapella or unaccompanied performances. you must perform to some kind of backing track or instrumentation so we can assess your tuning. please bring backing music (on your phone).
Guitarists – you will be required to demonstrate competent rhythm, and the ability to transition between open and barre chords.
Keyboard players or drummers do not need to bring their instrument, but guitarists should bring their guitar with them.
You are required to submit the following pre-interview tasks which must be received a minimum of 7 days prior to your interview.
- A written task (a minimum of 500 words)
- A recent recording you have produced/composed/contributed to.
- You must also provide a copy of a recent school report (send via email with your written task). We cannot offer you a place until this is provided.
If you do not have a recording (produced in the last 6 months) to submit we recommend you use Soundtrap or BandLab (free online production digital audio platforms) to demonstrate your production/music skills.
Your written task
You must submit (as a Word document or PDF) a short written piece of a minimum of 500 words which will act as a supporting statement to your application.
Please include
- A summary of your skills and strengths as a producer. Please also include some details of how you contributed to any recording you have provided and how it was produced.
- Describe any musical experiences you have had including performances, compositions, recording sessions, or other relevant information.
- Explain what qualities a professional producer or sound engineer requires and how you have demonstrated these qualities in your own work.
- Describe an important musical event in your life. This could be the first concert you attended, a song that means something to you, a musical experience you enjoyed as a child or something completely different!
You can submit any recording you have contributed to in the past 6 months, but where possible it should be between 3 minutes and 5 minutes in length.
The song or material can be of your choice, but we encourage you to show as much artistic and technical capability as possible.
Music technology requires either some music tech or musical background. If you cannot provide recordings you will be expected to demonstrate the ability to play an instrument (guitar, piano etc) to a reasonable standard.
Your recording
Both your written task (as an attachment) and any recording, or a link to any recording (if hosted elsewhere) should be emailed to us at music@northkent.ac.uk a minimum of 7 days prior to your interview date.
The pre-interview tasks will be considered as part of our assessment of your suitability for the course.
What will happen at your Technical Theatre interview
You will be shown around the theatre’s production facilities and be able to talk about all aspects of the course that interest you before an informal interview with the technical theatre lecturers. You will be finished by approximately 1pm. Please note, parents/friends will not be able to stay on site after registration.
We ask you to bring along your pre-interview tasks to discuss during your interview:
- This should firstly consist of a review of a previous production you have seen or an online performance.
- Secondly, you will have completed a design, drawing or made a small prop or set item for a Christmas production (of your choice), this should also be brought with you to the interview.
Please bring with you your latest school report. You are also encouraged to bring any work, such as photographs or portfolio that you feel may support your application, but this is not compulsory.
